Papier mache masks

Papier-mache is a very versatile technique. If made well it is extremely strong and lasting. You can use the masks for theatre projects

Teaches process and reusing materials

Blow up a balloon until head sized. Cover the balloon with strips of newspaper covered with glue (PVA). The more layers the stronger the mask will be. Do at least 4 layers

When dry (this may take some time), cut the balloon in half. This will give you two basic masks.

Add ears, noses, hair etc using card and then cover with the glued newspaper. Leave to dry then paint. A coat of white paint first helps.
