Use smaller bottles for the pawns. You could make different animals e.g. cats against dogs etc

Many different skills used

Take a piece of newspaper and roll it into a ball. Take another piece and make it into a cone. Tape the cone to the ball. This will be the head. Tape the head to the top of a bottle

Cover the bottle with papier mache

Paint 16 penguins to be the ‘white’ pieces and 16 to be the ‘black’ pieces. Glue on crowns, hats, swords etc to tell the different pieces apart
